This has been a year of lots and lots of deadlines, but this week I didn’t have any. So I took advantage of that extra time and cracked open my neglected sketchbook to take some time to play.
I draw pretty much every day, but most of this year has been drawing for work, which (while still fun!) is a very particular kind of drawing. There is a goal and usually there is a process to follow and a place I am trying to get to.
Sketchbook drawing (especially after not drawing in a sketchbook for awhile) has none of that. When I get back into my sketchbook after so much project drawing it can be difficult to remember how to draw just for me. Or what to even do with a sketchbook. So I go back to the tried and true. Boxes and repetition.
And then expand from there. What was interesting about that drawing? Is there anything I want to take to explore in another drawing? I’m not trying to make things that are beautiful, just trying to work out ideas on paper.
No rules, no requirements, just one thing leading to another to another.
Do it enough times and for long enough and your ideas will feed your ideas which will feed your ideas which is the very best place to be.
It does tend to end in a mess though. (at least for me.)
Hope you are taking some time to play too.
See you next week!
These are so freaking lovely and adorable!!
I LOVE ALL OF THESE EXPERIMENTS!! More please! Keep playing! xoxo
